The Patrol units (uniformed deputies) are responsible for the day-to-day patrolling of the county, answering complaints, serving civil process, criminal warrants, and responding to crime scenes and crimes in progress. Patrol officers often provide back-up for the five city police departments in Giles County.

In addition, the Sheriff's Department provides deputies as school resource officers for Richland and Giles County High Shools.

The Sheriff's Department has 31 sworn deputy positions.
